Oral history interview by Guy Surprenant of V. Harris (joined service 1955), instructor and C. Malenfant (joined service 1954), correctional officer, both at Dorchester Penitentiary. Topics include: orientation and early work routine (ie. tower duty); youth gang supervision; weapon use, maintenance and training; "blue book" penitentiary standing orders; shift operation, work requirements; daily prison routine; grievance procedure prior to unionization; relationship between senior officers and staff; pre-1960s commentary on staff camaraderie; lack of overtime pay in old days; inmate discipline and respect for officers in early days; administration of prison justice (ie. "warden's court"); corporal punishment, use of "paddle" or strap; prisoner discipline; comparison of pre and post 1960s prisoners. Additional topics include: various anecdotes concerning inmates; intuitive skills by guards to predict impending trouble/disturbances; and incidents involving Deputy Warden Cradle in 1950s, (ie. inmate work stoppage). <1h 15mn>
