Canadian Wildlife Service. Prairie and Northern Region : In 1963 the Canadian Wildlife Service, then a part of the National Parks Branch, established an office for the Western Region in Edmonton. The successor to this office is the Canadian Wildlife Service unit of the Prairie and Northern Regional office, one of five Environment Canada regional offices, each headed by a Regional Director General. This administrative structure was established in 1974 when the Department of the Environment was reorganized in an effort to reflect the regional presence of the department. It encompasses more than fifty percent of Canada's landmass, and includes five political jurisdictions (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories). The Region administers about 10 percent of the department's annual budget. The region contains twenty-one of the nation's thirty-nine natural regions in nine principal ecozones. These are broadly grouped into the Prairie, Cordilleran, Boreal, and Arctic ecosystems. Of all the regions in Canada, Prairie and Northern has the highest number of species on the endangered list. The region also has one of the two most threatened ecosystems in the country, the Prairies. The staff is concentrated in six major centres in the Region: Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary and the regional headquarters in Edmonton. 1586
