Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Water Resources Division and its predecessors. The series includes reclamation files, studies related to water power development in Canada, published flood risk maps of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia from Environment Canada (with the assistance of the provincial environmental departments) and a reference file related to the Buffalo Pound Lake Project.

Canada. Water Resources Division : In 1950, the Department of Mines and Resources was dissolved and the new Department of Resources and Development assumed responsibility for irrigation and water power development. The Water Resources Division (formerly the Dominion Water and Power Bureau) was one of five divisions of the Development Services Branch. The primary function of the Division was defined as "the acquisition, analysis, and publication of stream-flow and run-off data for Canada" (Resources and Development, Report, 1950). The Water Resources Division became one of five divisions in the Engineering and Water Resources Branch in 1951. (P.C. 84/5955, 9 December 1950; Report, Resources and Development, 1951).

In 1953, the name of the Department of Resources and Development became the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. The functions and organization of the Department remained essentially the same as those of its predecessor although "its responsibilities in relation to the North are more fully and clearly defined" (Northern Affairs and National Resources, Report, 1953-1954, p. 9; 2-3 Eliz.
