Sub-sub-series consists of government copies of leases and agreements of sale for Crown land issued by the federal government to lease holders or purchasers of land in the Northwest Territories or the Yukon from the beginning of land management. They contain information about the conditions and limitations each leaseholder or purchaser was required to fulfil. Other associated records include land registry files, registers, card indexes and survey plans.

The records are arranged by territory first and then sequentially by the agreement and lease number. There are two types of file numers resulting from a change in the system used to describe land. Until 1982 the land descriptions were based on one of three categories; Group area, lot and block, or unsurveyed. The new system introduced after 1981 divided land into quadrilateral areas. Each quadrilateral is subdivided into another 16 quads (i.e. Quad 105A to 105P) and each of these is subdivided again into 16 (i.e. Quad 105A/1 to 105A/16). This new land description is then included in the file number for a specific lot.

The registers and card indexes referred to in the description (series RG85-D-1-b and RG85-D-1-c) can also be used to match purchaser names to properties and to file numbers as well. Duplicate microform copies of the files and plans are also available in the territorial regional offices at Yellowknife and Whitehorse as well as Indian and Northern Affairs Canada headquarters office.
