The records include central registry files, a card index to cancelled and current leases and agreements of sale, land registers for Northwest Territories and Yukon lands, cancelled leases and agreements of sale, and survey maps and index cards of the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Lands Division : In 1947, a major reorganization of the Department of Mines and Resources occurred with the abolition of three Branches (Mines and Geology; Lands, Parks, and Forests; and Surveys and Engineering) and their replacement by two new Branches: Mines, Forests, and Scientific Services; and Lands and Development Services (P.C. 37/4433, 1 November 1947). The Lands and Development Services Branch brought together "all the national development and engineering and construction activities of the Department" (Mines and Resources, Annual Report, 1948, p. 7). The Lands and Development Services Branch included the Lands Division.

In 1950, a Lands Division and a Northern Administrations Service were established separately within the new Department of Resources and Development. A year later, these two units were combined into the Northern Administration and Lands Branch within which, however, the Lands Division preserved some of its previous autonomy. Upon its establishment as a division of the Northern Administration and Lands Branch in 1951, the Lands Division was divided into the Mineral Resources and Inspection Services (administration of mines, petroleum, coal, etc.) and the Public Lands and Lands Registry (Ordnance and Admiralty Lands, all other remaining Dominion Lands, hay and grazing permits, seed grain and fodder indebtedness, and land patents). In 1956 the name of the Lands Division was changed to the Mining and Lands Division, thus reflecting the two principal functions of the Division. Early in 1959, the Northern Administration and Lands Branch, which had expanded substantially during the 1950s, underwent a major reorganization. The Branch was renamed the Northern Administration Branch. The Mining and Lands Division became the Resources Division. In 1964, the Resources Division was removed entirely and combined with other resource components of the Department to form the separate Resource Development Branch. In 1977, after the restructuring of the Northern Affairs Program, the Land Management Division became a unit of the Northern Environmental Protection and Renewable Resources Branch.
