22 photographs : b&wLanguage of material:EnglishAccession:Scope and content:Sub-sub-series consists of central registry files created and maintained by the Northern Administration Branch. During this postwar period of expansion and reorganization of the federal government's northern responsibilities, the Branch revamped its file registry system in 1950-1951. The old system of sequentially numbered files developed in 1922 was abandoned and a new system of duplex-numeric files was created. In the latter system, each primary, secondary, and tertiary number represents a subject or location. Arranged hierarchically from primary to tertiary numbers, the composite file number (351-3-114, for example), represents a progression from a broad, general subject to a more specific reference to an individual case. In this example, the primary 351 is roads; the secondary 3 is for roads, streets, and sidewalks inside settlements; and the tertiary number 114 relates to a specific location or sub-subject. Thus, file 351-3-114 is a file on Streets and Sidewalks - Fort Norman, Northwest Territories; while file 351-3-200 is a file on Streets and Sidewalks - Whitehorse. Changing the secondary number to 2 for roads outside settlements, these files were created: 351-2-39: Roads - Dempster Highway, and 351-2-43: Roads - Johobo Road.
The following is a list of the principal primary numbers of the registry system. Administration files are in the 100 block,(100 - General, 120 - Finance and Estimates, 130 - Accounts, 140 - Equipment and Supplies, 150 - Personnel, 160 - Publicity). Economic and Industrial Development files are in the 200 block,(251 - Loan funds for Inuit, 255 - Arts and Crafts, 256 - Tourism, 257 - Industrial Development, 270 - Reindeer Industry). Engineering Projects files are in the 300 block,(300 - General, 310 - Buildings, 330 - Public Utilities, 340 - Communications, 350 - Transportation). Forests and Game files are in the 400 block (400 - Game, 420 - Warden Service, 430 - Fisheries, 440 - Forestry, 450 - Agriculture, 460 - Fire Protection, 470 - Special Projects). Public Service files are in the 500 block,(500 - Northwest Territories Council, 510 - Yukon Council, 520 - NWT and Yukon Municipal Administration, 530 - Territorial Ordinances, 540 - Justice and Police, 550 - Health, 560 - Welfare and Social Services, 570 - Estates, 590 - Liquor Control). Education files are in the 600 block,(600 - General, 610 - Teachers, 620 - Curriculum, 630 - Schools Administration, 640 - School Supplies and Equipment, 650 - Audio- Visual Aids, 660 - Professional Organizations, 670 - Recreation and Welfare (Schools), 680 - Vocational Training, 690 - Adult Education). Public Lands files of the Lands Division are found in the 700 block. Territorial Lands and Timber files of the Lands Division are in the 800 block. Resources files are in the 900 block, (900-960 - Provincial Oil and Gas, 970 - Northwest Territories and Yukon Oil and Gas, 990 - Mining). The 1000 block contains general files on settlements, associations, companies, provinces, foreign countries, Inuit affairs, and resources. Individual case files are found in the 20 block and Personnel and organizational files are found in the 3 block.
Within these broad principal primary blocks, there is of course a further breakdown into specific primary blocks; for example, 350 - Transportation breaks down into 350 - Transportation General, 351 - Roads and Streets (including Bridges, Sidewalks, and Ferries), 352 - Airports and Seaplane Bases, 353 - Wharves and Harbours, 354 - Aids to Navigation, 355 - Railroads, and 356 - Resource Roads. The Branch's file classification manual permits a full understanding of the nature of this registry system, and is the key to exploiting the richness of its records.
Many files were brought forward to this registry system from the registries of virtually all the earlier agencies described previously in this inventory. Some subregistries described below used the same system or certain isolated blocks of it (the 700 to 900 series, for example), but added alphabetical prefixes to the basic file number. These sub-registries of the Lands Division, Administrator of the Arctic, Resources Division, and Northern Coordination and Research Centre (RG85-D-2-a, MIKAN 135014; RG85-D-3-a, MIKAN 135016; RG85-D-4, MIKAN 135018; and RG85-D-5, MIKAN 135020) were maintained separately from the central registry office of the Northern Administration Branch itself and therefore are organized in separate series.Finding aid:Textual records (Electronic) Finding aid 85-1 is a file list indicating volume number, file number, file part, title and outside dates, that for this series refers to volumes 3-233, 236-334, 347-353, 360-553, 627-653, 688-722, 729- 730, 740-742, 1345-1346; 1866-1884, 2066-2082, 2114-2115, 2156-2157 and 2270-2274.
