Sub-series consists of twenty-eight ledgers and includes indexes, registers and claim books relating to mining activities in the Canadian North. They contain information about claims, leases and grants issued to quartz and placer prospectors. By 1946 copies of the related records were forwarded to headquarters along with duplicates of the registers by the regional mining recorders' offices in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Branch management deemed the consolidation of regional and headquarters material to be a more efficient, accurate and economical system. The copies sent to Ottawa apparently were in active use until the early 1960's. In 1968 the ledgers were examined by members of the Mining Section of the Oil and Mineral Division to determine their historical value and some years later, the ledgers in this sub-series were authorized for transfer to archives.
