Series consists of files from the central records systems of the National Research Council (NRC). These files pertain to the wide range of activities conducted by the NRC through the twentieth century.

The series is organized into sub-series, with each sub-series representing an iteration of the central records systems used at the NRC. The first system, a central registry, was developed in the 1940s to maintain files of correspondence and other papers for the NRC as a whole. Then, in the middle of the 1970s, the NRC moved to a simple duplex numeric system, which later became known as FIS v 1 (File Information System, version 1). A second version of the block numeric system was in use from 1992-2012 (FIS v 2); a third from April 2012-March 2016 (FIS v 3); and a fourth from 2016 (FIS v 4). Note that all systems could be applied retroactively, meaning that files maintained in a previous system could be incorporated into a current file information system and assigned new file numbers.

The series contains records from the first system (the central registry), and the initial two iterations of the block numeric system (FIS v 1 and FIS v 2).

While many of the these records were maintained by NRC's central Records Services while at NRC, in some cases the records were maintained by another organizational unit and the records may have been assigned file numbers only at the time of their transfer to the national archives.

Note that the use of central Records Services was optional throughout the NRC during the twentieth century; many research divisions maintained their records independently.
