Series consists of an extensive collection of both published, "near-published", and unpublished paper documentation available about the origin and operation of the CANDIDE macro econometric model. Accessions within the series include a substantial number of magnetic tapes containing the electronic embodiment of successive versions of that model. Most of the surviving tapes holding the later electronic versions of CANDIDE are at present unaccessible because the Economic Council used an American software (DAMSEL) which is no longer available. However the earliest versions - 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2M - used FORTRAN-based SIMSYS which is much more readily accessible. (Indeed the commercial firm, Informetrica, still uses a development of SIMSYS and could be looked to for some technical support). The first version of CANDIDE is available on tapes EC0304 and EC0407. From these two tapes it is possible to copy CANDIDE 1.0 (onto either magnetic tape or diskettes for personal computers) which can be read and interpreted. However as these tapes were only intended as backups, the National Archives can give no undertaking as to whether a researcher could get an operating system from these tapes. (RG75, Vols. 336-440)

Candide Group : The Candide Group was initiated in 1969-1970 as an interdepartmental venture under the auspices of the Economic Council of Canada. The Group was responsible for macroeconometric model development including the maintenance and up-dating of the large scale economic model Candide. The Candide model was used to prepare economic projections for use of Economic Council of Canada annual reviews and in special studies undertaken by the Council. RG75 General Inventory

While paper records are mainly to be found in this series, there are also some records in other fonds about the model's beginnings and early operation, since it was originally developed as an inter-departmental model. For example, in Department of Regional Economic Expansion fonds (RG124, volumes 6 to 8), one can trace the role of the Department of Regional Economic Expansion on the Inter-departmental Committee, especially in trying to create a "regionalized" version of CANDIDE.
