HMCS Tecumseh : In 1923 a "half-company" of the newly organized Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve was formed in Calgary. When hostilities broke out on Sept. 10, 1939, Calgary's reserves were dispatched to Esquimalt. On Nov. 1, 1941, all reserve divisions across the country were given names and commissioned as ships, ie. "stone frigates". Calgary's division was christened HMCS Tecumseh. Oct. 1, 1943 it was announced that a new 50,000 naval barracks was to be constructed. During the Second World War 93 officers, 4,143 men, and 270 wrens enlisted at Tecumseh. Following the hectic war years, Tecumseh became the demobilization centre for southern Alberta and the interior of British Columbia. In 1964 the nationwide complement of reserves was reduced and HMCS Nonsuch in Edmonton was closed, leaving Tecumseh as the only naval establishment in Alberta. It would remain so until the late 1970s when Nonsuch was reactivated. Although a naval base, Tecumseh is also home to the 746 Communications Squadron, a reserve army unit. Sea Cadets and Navy League Cadet divisions also operate out of Tecumseh, and in 1995 the Division's strength was 174 reservists. HMCS Tecumseh
