Description:

A documentary on the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis, also known as the Northern and Southern Lights. This documentary contains the first film footage depicting the movement of the Aurora. Other scenes include numerous personal accounts of the Aurora, including some from Inuit people; the NRC Scientific Support Facility at Fort Churchill, Manitoba; the South Pole observation station and underground control centres; various historical stills of Northern Lights researchers; early time-lapse photographs of the Aurora taken from space; construction of sounding rockets to study the Aurora, and a control room; satellite construction and animations; preparation of cameras to record auroral light, and the images thus obtained; a night launch of a sounding rocket; various shots of the polar research station, with an extra-sensitive real-time television system to record the Aurora; and a barium metal cloud launched towards the Aurora, and the analysis of results. <29mn 44s>

The filmmakers acknowledge the help of: Boston College; Brandeis University; National Research Council of Canada; Fort Churchill Research Range; Fort Churchill Primary School; Eskimo Museum, Churchill; National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Research; National Aeronautics & Space Administration; Air Force Cambridge Research Labs; Atomic Energy Commission; Stanford Research Institute; E.G. & G. Co.; University of Alaska; Norwegian Television; University of Oslo; Oslo Technical Museum; Norwegian Defense Research Estab.; and the inhabitants of Churchill, Canada; Fairbanks, Alaska; and Karasjok, Norway.~4.
