Canada. Royal Canadian Navy. H.M.C.S. Griffon : HMCS Griffon was set up in Port Arthur, now Thunder Bay, Ontario. A vacant garage was leased by Naval Reservists at the beginning of the Second World War, and, with the establishment of a policy of commissioning all "stone frigates," the garage became HMCS Griffon in 1941. Griffon recruited and provided basic seamanship instruction to volunteers enlisted in the naval service. In 1943 a new naval barracks was built and Griffon was dedicated in August of 1944. The Naval Reservists now had their own training facility complete with drill deck, parade square, rifle range, tennis courts, and accommodation for 130 recruits. The local shipyards would build some thirty corvettes and minesweepers for the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy during the war and Griffon would be home for the commissioning crews of these vessels. Over 2400 officers and ranks enlisted through Griffon for service to Canada. HMCS Griffon remains active and in 1995 the Division's strength was 112 reservists. HMCS Griffon website
