Sub-series consists of records related to the proposed Queen Elizabeth II Observatory. In the 1964 Mines and Technical Surveys Annual Report, the first mention is made of the plans for the Queen Elizabeth II Observatory to be constructed on Mount Kobau in south-central British Columbia. The observatory was to be named in honour of the royal visit of 1964. During the 1968-69 fiscal year, construction of the telescope was cancelled. The sub-series includes correspondence, draft proposals, consultants' reports, plans, field notes and newspaper clippings (RG48 volumes 2, 35-42). The sub-series includes monthly reports for the Queen Elizabeth II Telescope 1963 - 1970 as well as a few other related reports and records (RG21 volumes 455-457).

Custodial history:

The records in RG48 volumes 2, 35-42 were transferred to the National Research Council (NRC) in 1970 and 1982. The NRC transferred the files to the then Public Archives of Canada in 1984. As of spring 2013, the custodial history of RG21 volumes 455-457 is unclear.
