Sub-series consists of correspondence, field notes, memoranda, tables and diagrams relating to the creation of the boundary. Following disputes between Maine and New Brunswick, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty was signed in Washington on 9 August 1842 establishing the boundary between the two areas as stretching from the source of the St Croix River to the St Lawrence river. The treaty was named for the American (Daniel Webster) and British (Alexander Baring, 1st Baron of Ashburton) representatives. The surveyors were Albert Smith (United States) and Lt Col JBB Estcourt (Great Britain).
