Speech by Donald Jamieson to the Rotary Club of St. John's, Newfoundland. He speaks about such subjects as: Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders; the challenges of the large land mass of Newfoundland and particularly Labrador, but with a relatively small population; the per capita expenditures necessary to raise the standard of living; federal government expenditures in Newfoundland; the economy; the shift to technology and highly scientific industry; the decline in the potential of Newfoundland's natural resources; royalties for natural resources; the generation of foreign capital for Canada; Newfoundland's per capital contribution to Canada's foreign exchange reserves; the Newfoundland economy; Newfoundland's overdependence on its exports; the decline in Newfoundland's job opportunities; forestry and fishing; the declining number of workers required in the pulp and paper industry due to changes in technology; the problem of trying to get large industries to relocate away from large metropolitan areas; the need for Newfoundland to move away from a focus on the export of raw materials if it wants to create jobs; the need to develop capacity to upgrade products such as fish to finished products such as convenience foods; the need to upgrade from exporting iron ore to pellets and smelting; industrial expansion; and the need to develop job opportunities to stop Newfoundlanders from moving away to look for jobs. His speech is followed by a short speech of thanks by an unnamed speaker and t he conclusion of the meeting. <33mn 30s>
