This is a radio broadcast, presented in cooperation with local radio stations, about the SAGE air defence system. Roderick King, roving reporter for Ontario Hydro, goes on a tour of a SAGE installation underground at North Bay Ontario. This starts with sound effects and sirens. He interviews Captain William Graves of the United States Air Force. Graves describes the construction of the installation. The purpose of SAGE is anti-nuclear defence. Inside the building, Squadron Leader Jack Patterson of the northern NORAD region staff describes a scale model of the facility and describes the duties of the staff. King interviews four people who work in the complex: Flight Sergeant Bob [Tippell] of the RCAF, Technical Sergeant Frank Leary of the USAF, Corporal [Gerry Noggo] of the RCAF and a civilian secretary, Barbara Fortier. Cliff White, one of the technical assistants, talks about the twin IBM computers in the SAGE complex, with 65,000 tubes, 600,000 resisters and 500,000 dials. During this interview audio from the computer, amplifying the sound of the computer memory at work, is playing. There is also audio of the magnetic drum system of the computer. There are 12 magnetic drums. The computer stores 700,000 bits of information. William Graves describes the console that depicts the displays of radar data monitoring aircraft in the Ottawa sector. This controls air defence weapons. King also reports from the airfield and interviews Flying Officers Jack Cunningham, Larry [Taves], John Kirk and Jim [Leashon] of 414 All-Weather Fighter Squadron. This is followed by sirens and the sound of fighter jets starting up and taking off. <29mn 27s>
