Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Archives Branch, including files from the Office of the Director General, Archives Branch, when this position was held by Hugh Taylor (1971-1977). The records reflect the administrative and policy-making aspects of the various divisions of the Branch. Included are files of an administrative nature on management audit, program planning, security, and acquisition policy; subject files on the Canadian Conservation Institute, Canadian Historical Association, National Archives Appraisal Board, Ottawa City Archives, and the Society of American Archivists.

Canada. Archives Branch : Created in 1966, the Historical Branch's mandate was to acquire and preserve a comprehensive collection of documentary materials of all kinds as a record of our heritage, a collective national memory. At the time of it's creation, the Historical Branch comprised the following divisions: Manuscript Division, Map Division and Picture Division. Increased expansion and diversification of Branch programs resulted in the formation of two new Divisions in 1973. Public Records, which was created as a Section of the Manuscript Division in 1965, achieved Divisional status. A Machine Readable Archives Division was also formed to acquire and service automated public records and similar material of permanent value form the private sector, with the result that the acquisition programs of the Branch now span every archival medium of record from parchment to magnetic tape. In 1975, another Division, the National Photography Collection, was created. The following year, the Historical Branch was renamed the Archives Branch, as it was felt that the latter expressed better the functions of the Branch, and was more suitable in view of the wide range of researchers using its services, besides historians. In 1986, the Archives Branch became the Historical Resources Branch. During the same year, the two divisions most concerned with government records, the Federal Archives Division and the Machine Readable Archives Division, were merged to form the new Government Archives Division. Its acquisition mandate reflected those of its two predecessors, with the exception that private electronic data would now fall within the mandate of the Manuscript Division. RG37 General Inventory
