Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Public Records Committee. Between 1947 and 1950 the Public Records Committee received reports on the wartime activities from the departments of National Defence, Justice, National Health and Welfare, War Contracts Depreciation Board, Secretary of State, Civil Defence Organization, Agriculture, Munitions and Supply, Labour, National War Services and related files.

The records include correspondence with the Emergency Measures Organization, Records Management Association of Ottawa, memoranda, submissions (including microfilm) minutes of the PRC and samples of government forms. Also included are working papers of the 1959 Records Management Survey Committee, organizational charts and file classification manuals, statistics, reports and recommendations. Minutes and correspondence from 1936-1966 are available on microfiche.

Canada. Public Records Committee : The Public Records Committee was established by Order in Council (P.C. 6175, 20 September 1945) on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Public Records set up by the Secretary of State to look into the matter of records conservation. One of the predecessors of the Public Records Committee was the Departmental Commission on Public Records. Of special concern to the Committee were those records relating to the wartime activities of the government, and the possibility of establishing a Public Records Office in Ottawa. A later phase of the committee's task consisted of the establishment of the storage, scheduling and general management of public records as well as developing microfilm criteria. The membership of the Public Records Committee changed to reflect the government's peacetime activities, with the Dominion Archivist as Chairman, in accordance with (P.C. 212, 16 February 1961).
