Series consists of records created and maintained by the Canadian National Railways Office of Personnel and Labour Relations. These records include information relating to pay rates and regulations, labour relation case files, management meeting minutes, compensation data, and bond subscriptions for the period 1918-1964.

In vols. 11863-11925, there are circulars of case files created by the Canadian Railway Board of Adjustment (predecessor to the Canadian Railway office of Arbitration, which has operated from 1965-current). See lower level sub-series description for more details.

There is also an employee service register for southeastern and central Ontario, which covers the period from ca. 1899-1950. The alphabetically-arranged employee service records consist of tombstone data containing name, birth date, next-of-kin, employee fund number, occupation/title, a list of stations where the individual worked, rates of pay received, start and leave dates.

The first section of the register concerns employees who worked at such stations as Trenton, Hillier, Kingston, Napanee, Picton, Brighton, Belleville, Orono and other smaller stations for the period of 1899-1934. The remaining two sections concern employees who worked at Orillia, Uxbridge, Scarboro, Lindsay, Muskoka, and Mariposa, for the periods of ca. 1917-1942 and ca. 1918-1950.

Volumes 16359 and 16373 contains records relating to unions and labour negotiations, 1950s-1960s.

Canadian National Railways. Personnel and Labour Relations : According to annual reports, the Canadian National Railways, Personnel and Labour Relations office underwent a number of changes. From 1923-1930 the personnel and labour relations function was the responsibility of the Superintendent of Pensions and Relief (Surintendant des pensions et secours) under the Department of Insurance, Lands, Express, Telegraphs, Colonization, Development and General Matters. This department evolved with a changing corporate structure but the position remained constant. While the personnel function is not listed in annual reports from 1931-1934, it later appears under the following names: the Department of Personnel, 1935-1941; the Department of Labour Relations, with positions of Chief of Personnel (listed in 1942) and Director of Labour Relations, 1942-1947; the Personnel Dept (Service des Relations ouvrières), 1948-1951; Personnel, 1951-1959; and Personnel and Labour Relations (Personnel et Relations ouvrières), 1960-1969. After 1969, these functions become two separate departments, Human Resources and Labour Relations. RG30 General Inventory.
