Canada. Canadian Forces Base (Calgary, Alta.) : Currie Barracks in Calgary, Alberta was officially opened in 1933 and housed a combination of infantry, RCASC and RCAF personnel throughout the next decade. During the Second World War Currie Barracks became a Training Centre (A-16) for units mobilized from Calgary, and tasked to provide reinforcements for the Calgary Highlanders and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. In 1946, Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) and 1 Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry were stationed there. Following the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, the Currie Barracks were rapidly expanded and transformed into a major military centre. On 26 October 1950, a Headquarters Calgary Garrison was organized to coordinate the administration of units in the garrison. The Calgary Barracks were redesignated Canadian Forces Base Calgary on 14 March 1966. Camp Wainwright at Denwood, Alberta became a satellite auxiliary training camp under the jurisdiction of CFB Calgary on 1 January 1967. Under the operational control of Mobile Command, CFB Calgary was ordered to provide administrative and support services for the units lodged with it. On 20 February 1969 Mobile Command reorganized CFB Calgary by combining it with Headquarters 1 Combat Group. Both the base and Combat Group reported to one commander and the base was tasked with providing administrative and support services to the integral units posted to it as well as support of 1 Combat Group in field operations. Its initial lodger units were: Headquarters, 1 Combat Group, The Fort Garry Horse, 1 Signal Squadron, 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Band, Headquarters, 7 Tactical Wing, and 1 Service Battalion. In September 1991, 1 Canadian Brigade Group and CFB Calgary became independent of each other under separate commands and reported to Land Force Western Area.
