Sub-series consists of an index, also known as the key code, that was used by the fisheries registry office to aid in classifying correspondence and retrieving material from the registry records. The index is numerically organized, with the primary classification block being 700 followed by secondary and tertiary numbers representing specific aspects of the subject or location. For example: 702 - Pollution of Rivers and Harbours; 702-2 - Nova Scotia; 702-2-3 - Victoria Co. ; 721- Legislation; 721-5 - Pelagic Sealing Treaty; 721-5-11 - Seizures made by Russians. This classification index identifies the subjects under which correspondence, memoranda, reports, etc. were placed; when used in conjunction with the lists of files, the researcher can better identify material of relevance to their research topic.
