United Nations Force in Cyprus. Canadian Contingent : The United Nations mission to Cyprus, UNFICYP, was instigated to prevent further hostilities between the Greek and Turkish residents sharing the small Mediterranean island. Canadian peacekeepers were sent to Cyprus, under the operation code name SNOW GOOSE, and deployed on 6 March 1964. The Canadian peacekeepers attempted to mediate cease-fires, protect civilians, offer humanitarian aid and generally interpose themselves between the two warring factions, at some locations no more than a couple of hundred metres apart. The Royal 22nd Battalion and an armoured reconnaissance squadron of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, consisting of about 1,150 men in total, were the first units sent to Cyprus. Cyprus remains Canada's longest peacekeeping mission and when the last Canadian unit left in 1993, over 26 units had been posted, suffering over twenty fatalities and countless casualties in the attempt to preserve and restore order.
