Sub-series consists of approximately 3000 index cards created by the Department of Transport as an in-house finding aid to marine casualty investigation records and wreck reports. The cards are arranged chronologically and within each year in various groupings. Information contained on the cards includes name of ship, date of casulaty, type of casualty, area (east, inland or west), type of investigation (if any), whether or not the incident entailed loss of life and the name of the pilot (if applicable). Many cards also contain references to the corresponding Department of Transport central registry file concerning the incident.

(Electronic) Paper finding aid 12-39 lists the outside dates of the index cards in each volume. The outside dates for the four volumes of index cards are: 1930-1972 (volume 2956); 1969-1975 (volume 2957); 1972-1974 (volume 2958); and 1975 (volume 2959).
