Ottawa Presbyterial Women's Missionary Society : The Ottawa Presbyterial was formed in 1887 to coordinate the work of local auxiliaries of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada at the level of the presbytery. The Women's Foreign Missionary Society had been formed in 1876 in Toronto (it later became the Women's Missionary Society when it merged with the Women's Home Missionary Society in 1914) with the objective of supporting the work of Presbyterian missionaries among women and children. An auxiliary was formed in Ottawa in 1878 with members coming from several Presbyterian congregations in the city. The creation of an auxiliary in Aylmer, Quebec in 1885 and in other congregations in the area about the same time gave impetus to the demand for the formation of a society at the presbytery level. The Ottawa Presbyterial comprised originally the auxiliaries of Ottawa, Aylmer, Chelsea, South Russell, and Metcalfe, and the Ottawa Mission Band. Mrs. John Thorburn, who had been president of the Ottawa Union auxiliary for many years and had been active in the formation of other auxiliaries in the area, was the first president.

In an effort to encourage greater participation from women, the Ottawa Union auxiliary was dissolved in 1893 and individual auxiliaries were created for each of the congregations in the city. By that time there were more than twenty auxiliaries in the Ottawa Presbyterial. The Ottawa Presbyterial survived the creation of the United Church in 1925 to represent the auxiliaries of the remaining Presbyterian churches in the area.
