The fonds consists mainly of photographs of Donnacona, Quebec taken in 1941, while the donor was acting as assistant to Prof. E.F. Haden of McMaster University during a trip to the Maritimes to record Acadian French dialects. It also includes three postcards of Western Canada from 1910.

Tassie, J. S : James Stewart Tassie was born at Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 6 June 1917. During undergraduate studies at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, in 1941, he acted as assistant to Professor Ernest F. Haden, who was touring Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the Magdalen Islands making recordings of Acadian French speakers. He graduated from McMaster University in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following service as an officer in the Canadian Army from 1942 to 1946, he undertook graduate studies at the University of Toronto, receiving a Master of Arts degree in 1947 and a doctorate in Romance languages in 1957. From 1948 to 1982, he taught at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, serving as Chairman of the Department of French 1952-1962 and 1965-1971, Acting Chairman of the Department of German 1964-1965, Chairman of the Department of Spanish 1964-1967, and Professor of French 1964-1982.
