It is hard to imagine anyone wanting to leave this country for greener pastures elsewhere. Yet that is precisely what 600,000 French Canadians did at the turn of the century; they flocked to New England in hope of a brighter future. What they experienced was the downtrodden lot of the working class and cultural assimilation - the loss of their language and their identity. This pair of films - two complete films which are related but not dependent on one another for comprehension - recreates one of the darkest eras of our past through the eyes of the Lambert family, employed in the textile mills of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. In the 1920s, the emigrants' frustration and anger explode in a bitter labour dispute; decades later, in the 1980s, their descendants resort to hostage taking and other, more conventional, means to call attention to their plight.
