CBC Radio broadcast of the opening ceremonies of the new Ottawa City Hall on Green Island by Princess Margaret. Reporter David [Scrivens] describes: the greeting of Princess Margaret by Ottawa Mayor George H. Nelms; crowds trying to get a better look at the Princess; and the Princess and the Mayor ascending the spiral staircase of the City Hall.~Reporter [Ian Fellows] describes activities on the upper floor of the building, including the meeting of the Princess with city aldermen and members of Board of Control. [Fellows] tells listeners that the acoustics in the new building are so good that he has to speak in "gloomy tone" in order to avoid being overheard by guests at the opening ceremony. He describes the entry into the council chamber by the city aldermen and their wives and members of Board of Control and their wives. Also described is the architecture of the council chamber, including plastic skylights called "skydomes".~There is actuality of a speech of welcome to Princess Margaret by Mayor Nelms. Nelms talks about the history of Ottawa's city halls. This is followed by a brief speech in French (possibly by Nelms also). Princess Margaret then makes a speech, in both English and French, to declare the city hall officially open.~[Fellows] describes the chinchilla fur wrap given to Princess Margaret and the walk by the Princess and other officials to the balcony. The cheering of the crowd is audible.~[Scrivens] describes the crowds greeting Princess Margaret, the Princess coming down the spiral staircase, crowds of photographers, and the Princess leaving the city hall and getting into a car. A band plays. The broadcast closes with a station identification from CBO and CBO-FM, Ottawa. <22mn 50s>
