Sub-series comprises the records accumulated by various Commandants during the course of their activities at Royal Roads Military College. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, speeches, invitations, agendas, and other records pertaining to a broad range of administrative and ceremonial activities. The files also contain copies of minutes included in other series, such as those of the Faculty Board, Faculty Council, and Senate, inter-filed with records pertaining to activities referred to in the minutes. The records were accumulated by the Commandants'secretaries and were not generally classified by file number or volume, unlike records maintained by the Central Registry or the Office of the Registrar. In this sub-series, file title is not necessarily indicative of actual file contents: the most significant example of this is the group of files entitled "Commandant's Budget," which are in fact general correspondence files. The majority of the files were not organized by the Office of the Commandant into any specific functional groupings, often with the result that groups of files related by title or subject were not maintained in physical proximity to one another. These files have been rearranged according to subject by the archivist. However, some of the files were grouped together under specific headings, and these original groupings have been preserved. These headings are as follows: ADP Requirements; Briefs; RRMC Departments; RRMC Development Plans; Honourary Degrees; and Honours Day/Graduation. The headings and the files included in them are indicated in the file list.

Royal Roads Military College. Office of the Commandant : The senior official of the military wing of Royal Roads Military College was the Commandant, who also held the civilian title of Vice-Chancellor. Within these capacities he held final responsibility for resource allocation and the day-to-day administration of the College; in addition, he chaired meetings of the College Senate (in the absence of the Minister of National Defence, Chancellor of RRMC), the College Council, and the Safety Committee. The Commandant was also expected to conduct short courses, symposia, and seminars, and to represent the College and Canadian forces in external academic, military and community activities and at social events. In his role as Commandant, this officer reported through the Chief of Personnel Development to the Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel) in the Department of National Defence; in his role as Vice-Chancellor, i.e., when he was acting on matters which fell within the purview of the College Senate, he reported directly to the Minister of National Defence.
