Canada. Canadian Forces Station (Armstrong, Ont.) : The radar station at Armstrong, Ontario, approximately thirty-five kilometers northwest of Lake Nipigon, became operational in 1952 as part of the NORAD system. For the first ten years it was garrisoned by the USAF, who handed it over to the 38 Radar Squadron, RCAF in October 1962. During the mid 1960s it was redesignated as CFS Armstrong. Allocated to Air Defence Command, during its history CFS Armstrong was under operational control of both 23 and 29 NORAD Region. The role of the unit was to collect, process and disseminate radar collected data and operate communications with designated Semi Automated Ground Environment and Back-up Intercept Control ( SAGE/BUIC) agencies. The Armstrong airfield was maintained and used for military and civilian aircraft, though it was entirely the responsibility of the Department of Transport.
