Canada. Canadian Armed Forces. Combat Engineer Regiment, 2 : On 1 January 1947 23 Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers was reactivated and grouped with 23 Infantry Brigade. It was disbanded to form 1 Field Squadron, RCE in November 1953. The first Canadian Forces Organization Order for the unit ( 3.41), dated 4 November 1968, indicated that 1 Field Squadron was to provide engineer support to the unit or formation to which it was assigned under Mobile Command. With the disbandment of 3 Engineers Stores Depot, 1 Field Squadron was tasked to provide combat engineer support as dictated by 2 Combat Group at CFB Petawawa. In 1977 1 Field Squadron was redesignated as 2 Combat Engineer (2 CER) with 22 Field Squadron, a component of the regiment, located at CFB Gagetown. On 1 December 1978 2 Combat Engineer Regiment was allocated to Special Service Force (SSF) to provide combat engineer support and to undertake special construction tasks. As part of the SSF, 2 CER formed an Airborne Engineer grouping which was to be parachute deployable. In addition to its combat engineer support role it was to prepare for involvement in the following tasks: national emergency and disaster response, international disaster relief, peacekeeping, demining, northern development and pollution control. 2 CER sent a contingent to the Gulf War in 1991 and to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1994-1995.
