Canada. Canadian Armed Forces. Manitoba Militia Area : In 1946 Prairie Command was formed from Military Districts No. 10 and 12 in order to coordinate both Active and Reserve Force units in the area. The Primary Reserve (Militia) was reorganized on 1 September 1970 to comprise five groupings under the command of Mobile Command, these being: Militia Area Atlantic, Militia Area Eastern, Militia Area Central, Militia Area Prairie and Militia Area Pacific, each with a Regular Force Support Staff. The Prairie Militia Area comprised the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba (originally known as the Winnipeg Militia District and redesignated in October 1977), and units at Thunder Bay and Kenora. Canadian Forces Organizational Order 3.103, dated 1 April 1985, allocated separate districts formed by geographic location to Militia Area Prairie Command: Thunder Bay, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northern Alberta and Southern Alberta. Manitoba Militia Area held operational control over the following units: Headquarters, Manitoba Militia District, The Fort Garry Horse, 26th Field Artillery Regiment and Band, 13th Field Battery, 26th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Independent Field Battery, 21st Field Engineer Squadron, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles and Band, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and Band, 17 (Winnipeg) Service Battalion, and 17 (Winnipeg) Medical Company. The mandate of the Manitoba Militia Area was to provide operationally ready Militia forces to support the Regular Force. Its main functions were: to document all personnel recruited by Winnipeg Militia units, conduct upgrading NCO and officer courses, coordinate unit training exercises, and allocate equipment and supplies to units. Its headquarters were located at Minto Armoury, Winnipeg and supported by CFB Winnipeg.
