Canada. Canadian Armed Forces. Wing, 1 : Formed on 1 March 1951 as No. 1 Fighter Wing at North Luffenham, England, the Wing moved to its European station at Marville, France on 1 March 1955. The wing commander of 1 Wing reported directly to the Commander 1 Air Division and the wing's first squadrons were made up of F-86 Sabres, No. 410, No. 441 and No. 439. On 1 March 1963, 1 Wing relinquished its specialized fighter designation, becoming a transport formation. The major roles of the wing, as described in its 1966 historical report, were: to fly reconnaissance missions, and to provide the operational, technical and logistical support for 439 and 441 Reconnaissance Squadrons; to fly transport missions in logistic support of Canadian European Forces, and to support 109 Composite Unit (KU) Squadron which is tasked in that role; to serve as an overseas Air Transport Terminal and handle freight and passengers by supporting the 5 Air Movements Unit; operate a Wing Instrument and Practice Flight for proficiency training of aircrew from the Wing and 1 Air Division Headquarters; and provide facilities and administrative support for 601 Telecom Detachment, 1 Canadian Overseas Postal Depot and Air Transport Command Servicing Detachment. 1 Wing also provided 1 Air Division Headquarters nuclear detonation reports and information made available from micro-wave sites. 1 Wing moved from Marville, France to Lahr, West Germany on 1 April 1967 and took over all watch keeping duties for all of 1 Air Division. 1 Wing was tasked in assisting 1 Air Division by maintaining operational efficiency and effectiveness for the units under its command and to provide to 1 Air Division Headquarters nuclear detonation reports and such additional information that can be made available from micro-wave sites. 1 Wing gained 430 Strike/Attack Squadron on 1 July 1969 with the disbandment of 3 Wing. In the Canadian Forces Organizational Order 4.2, dated 12 June 1969, the following integral units were assigned to the Wing: 109 Composite Unit, 430 Strike/Attack Squadron, 439 Reconnaissance Squadron, 441 Reconnaissance Squadron, 5 Air Movements Unit, 1 Air Division Central Supply Unit, 1 Air Division Medical Centre, 750 Communication Squadron, 35 Field Dental Unit Headquarters, 1 Canadian Air Division Postal Unit, 35 Dental Unit Detachment, and 75 Communication Group.
