Canadian Military Electronic Standards Agency : The Canadian Military Electronic Standards Agency had its beginning in the Standardization Division, Signals Production Branch of the wartime Department of Munitions and Supply. That part of the division's staff which was employed in the standardization of electronic components was transferred to the National Research Council on July 1, 1945. Less than a year later, in February 1946, the Chiefs of Staff Committee approved the formation of an Inter-Service Sub-Committee on Electronic Standards and the staff at NRC was transferred to DND.

The new Inter-Service Sub-Committee was responsible to the Joint Communications Committee. It became known as the Canadian Services Electronics Standards Sub-Committee (ESSC) in 1952. Its administration, accommodation and staff pay were the responsibility of the RCAF. CAMESA was formed on January 1, 1954 "to co-ordinate and standardize parts, materials, processes and practices of importance in military electronic apparatus" (File 01-0, vol. 3, f.25(?) in accession 1989-90/045, box 1), especially those of joint service interest. ESSC was the steering committee for CAMESA.

CAMESA's responsibilities were to provide technical advice and make recommendations both to the Canadian Forces and to electronic equipment manufacturers concerning the application of electronic parts, materials and associated items in military equipment. It provided and approved standards, specifications and preferred parts lists for the Canadian Forces; it conducted and supervised tests in government and commercial laboratories; and acted as liaison for the Canadian Forces in matters relating to standardization of electronic equipment.
