This documentary begins by explaining that jets flying at high altitudes often encounter clouds of super-cooled water droplets that freeze to the outside of the jet, weighing it down, or pass into the jet engine and freeze, reducing the engine's power or damaging rotating compressor blades. A diagram is used to show where ice builds up in jet engines and explain how anti-icing systems can be used to break up the ice or prevent it from forming in the first place. These systems either use hot air to melt the ice, or a spray of alcohol to lower the freezing point of the liquid. The film then shows and explains the test cells set up at the National Research Council Engine Lab in Ottawa to research how and where the ice forms, and test the effectiveness of anti-icing systems. The tests involve both jet engines and turboprop engines, and examine the effects of both super-cooled water droplets and ice crystals. The films ends with a Trans-Canada Air Lines plane preparing for takeoff, while the narration emphasizes the importance of the NRC Engine Lab's ongoing research in reducing the hazards of ice accretion. <16mn 40s>
