Classic film noir. Robert Mitchum plays a retired private eye running a gas station in a small town. But his past catches up with him. The wealthy and urbane Kirk Douglas summons him to complete some old business: Mitchum was once hired by Douglas to track down Jane Greer who had shot him and stolen $40,000. Mitchum finds her, believes her lies, and falls in love. They go on the run, Mitchum's partner finds them, demands the $40,000 to keep quiet, and is shot dead by Greer. Now Mitchum is hauled off to see Douglas and finds Greer with him. Douglas sends him to recover some incriminating papers from a lawyer in San Francisco. The lawyer is murdered and Mitchum framed. In possession of the papers, Mitchum asks Douglas to destroy Greer's affidavit that Mitchum killed his partner. But Greer kills Douglas and asks Mitchum to run away with her. He pretends to agree but alerts the police. Apparently fleeing, they are gunned down by the police, though Greer has already shot Mitchum. <96mn>
