Series consists of letters from Paul Almond to his mother while he was working as a deckhand on Great Lakes ships during the summer of 1948, and to his mother and aunt, Hilda Mulvany Gray, while at Oxford University, touring with the Oxford and Cambridge Players in England and with the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club in Europe 1949-1953. Also included are letters from Hilda Mulvany Gray to her sister Irene Almond while in England visiting Paul and letters to and from their sister Leonie Prikryl.

The letters from Paul Almond to his mother and aunt continue after his move to Toronto to work for the C.B.C., 1954-1963, his marriage to Angela Leigh (included are a few letters from Leigh to Irene Almond), and his later move to England, 1963-1965. They record his separation and subsequent marriage to Geneviève Bujold (included are a few letters from Bujold to Irene Almond), and the beginning of his career as a feature filmmaker.

The material also includes postcards from Paul Almond to his aunt Hilda Mulvany Gray and other family letters, including ones relating to his cousin Ted Wright in Gaspé.
