The class CAB 5, Colonial Office Memoranda "C", consists of volumes 1 to 9 of the "C" series. It contains typescript and printed memoranda of the sub-committee on Colonial (later Oversea) Defence, one of four permanent sub-committees of the Committee of Imperial Defence. Most of the papers considered by the sub-committee eventually went forward to the Committee of Imperial Defence and therefore much of this material is duplicated in CAB 8. Topics of particular relevance to Canada include: the standard of defence at Esquimalt, naval bases of Halifax and the adequacy of the existing garrison to resist an attack by land, the defence of Canada, the Canadian Militia Act of 1904, the relative rank of the officers of the British and Canadian forces, the defence of colonial ports, warships on the Great Lakes of North America, postal and press censorship, the storage of oil at overseas British ports, the probable scales of attack against oversea British ports and the control of aircraft in Newfoundland.
