International Red Aid was founded in Moscow in December 1922, to materially and morally aid Communists incarcerated in "capitalist prisons". It had organizations in 49 countries, and, under the general direction of the Comintern, co-operated with this focal international body. While it met only once in a congress (1932), in 1923 it successfully established 18 March as "Red Aid Day", a day of collection of public monies for its cause.

In Canada, it was the Labour Defence Council which was affiliated with the International Red Aid. The documents in this series -- correspondence, reports and press and informational material -- detail the Council's interrelationship with the CPC and International Red Aid, as well as with other left-wing organizations in Canada, and activities related to providing relief to left-wing revolutionaries around the world.

International Red Aid intermeshed with Western relief agencies during World War II. When, in 1947, its subordination to Moscow was publicly proven, the organization was dissolved.
