Series consists of documentation relating to Ted Allan's various writing projects involving the story of Dr. Norman Bethune. Norman Bethune was born in Gravenhurst in 1890 and graduated from the University of Toronto's School of Medicine. After suffering from tuberculosis himself, he became an expert in thoracic surgery. Moving to Montreal, Bethune practised at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur, where he invented new medical instruments which are still in use today. He joined the Communist Party and agitated for social health in Québec. He went to Spain during the Spanish Civil War and is credited with beginning the world's first mobile blood transfusion service there. He then went to China and organized mobile medical units for the Chinese Communists. He died in China in 1939, becoming a Chinese hero and martyr. Through books like Ted Allan's "The Scalpel, the Sword" and films like "Bethune: the making of a hero", Bethune has become a Canadian legend. His birthplace in Gravenhurst is now a national historic site.

Series consists of four sub-series: Correspondence, Manuscripts, Publicity Material and Reviews, and Research Material. The Research Material sub-series includes three sub-sub-series consisting of archival records of Norman Bethune collected by Ted Allan, as follows: Norman Bethune's Correspondence and Memoranda, Norman Bethune's Published Writings, and Norman Bethune's Memorabilia. The series also includes sound recordings made by Ted Allan about reminiscences about Bethune by Allan and others and his recorded commentary about a meeting he had with Ted Kotcheff about plans for the feature film about Bethune.
