Sub-series includes correspondence relating to research for "The Scalpel, The Sword", including letters from friends and colleagues of Norman Bethune's (among the correspondents are Jean Ewen, Frances Coleman, Mme Sun Yat-Sen, and Dr. Georges Deshaies) and correspondence with publishers and with Allan's co-author, Sydney Gordon. There is also correspondence relating to the Bethune Memorial Committee, including a letter from James Endicott, 1972; correspondence with film companies, producers and others relating to the making of "Bethune: the Making of a Hero", including a photocopy of a letter from Donald Sutherland; and correspondence with Allan's lawyer Alvin Deutsch. Among the correspondents in the general correspondence files are William Kashtan, 1977, and Rod Stewart, John Kemeny and Michael Spencer, 1970.

Also included a letter from Sidney Carter ca. 1942 discussing Bethune's art and the influence of Graham Norwell, and letters from other friends and colleagues of Bethune's. There is also correspondence with Twentieth Century Fox about a proposed film in 1943. Later correspondence about "Bethune: the Making of a Hero" includes a letter, 1979, from Sean Connery.
