Series consist of correspondence, notes, memoranda, briefs, reports and minutes of meetings from these congregations and the Godfrey family's leadership role. Goel Tzedec congregation and Beth Hamidrash Hagadol, forerunners of Beth Tzedec, were both founded by immigrants in the 1880's, as the second and third Jewish congregations in Toronto. They carried on a separate existence until they amalgamated in 1952 under the name Beth Tzedec congregation, and in 1955 moved to the newly built synagogue structure at 1700 Bathurst Street, Toronto, where the congregation still worships.

This series deals with the period of Bert Godfrey's presidency, that is from November 1948 until January 1956, first of Goel Tzedec congregation until 1952 when amalgamation took place, and then the founding President of the amalgamated Beth Tzedec congregation until 1956. Covered are events and negotiations that led to the amalgamation of the two synagogues, Beth Hamidrash Hagadol congregation and Goel Tzedec congregation into Beth Tzedec congregation. It was also during this period that negotiations, protracted as they were, finally convinced York Township council to grant a buiding permit for the building of the new synagogue building on Bathurst Street. And many of these pages refer to the fund-raising and the actual building of the new synagogue structure and its dedication in December, 1955.

It was also during this period that a call was issued to Rabbi Stuart E. Rosenberg to become the new Rabbi and spiritual leader of the amalgamated Beth Tzedec congregation.
