Series mainly consists of letters to Sir John Thomas Duckworth (1748-1817), with copies of a few from him, arranged in roughly alphabetical order by the surname of the author. Much of the correspondence is of a public nature comparable to the naval material in the holdings of other repositories included in the National Archives of Canada's Duckworth collection. There are also some scattered accounts, including two for Newfoundland, 1810, and receipts.

In addition, there is a good deal of personal business correspondence, relating mainly to prizes and prize money. A considerable part of the correspondence is of a more private character. Notable in this category are the letters of William Baker, a friend who appears to have held a watching brief for Duckworth's interests during his absences from England. Baker's numerous letters often enclose copies of his own correspondence relating to Duckworth's business affairs as well as to his supervision of various matters relating to Duckworth's children.

Included in Baker's correspondence are copies of a few letters to him from Duckworth's son George, his daughter Sarah Anne and her husband Captain Richard King. There are also a few letters written by his son J.T.B. Duckworth to his mother at the age of eight, shortly after his father's death. Also of personal interest are the letters of George Morey, who seems to have been Duckworth's bailiff and who makes numerous reports on matters connected with Wear House, Duckworth's seat near Exeter. Also included are a few genealogical letters and other items of later date pertaining to Duckworth's Duckworth-King descendants.
