Series consists of the Duckworth collection in the National Maritime Museum, reorganized after the National Archives of Canada had microfilmed its selections in 1959. The old class numbers appearing on the microfilm are noted in the listing found in Finding Aid 100 and the new class numbers are supplied in the expanded inventory description which prefaces the finding aid.

The selections made relate mainly to the period of Duckworth's Newfoundland command, 1810-1812, with the heaviest concentration of material in 1812. Apart from a very few personal items, the material is of a public character concerned either with his civil function as Governor or his naval function as Commander-in-Chief, with the naval material predominating.

Particularly notable is a letterbook, 1812, relating to both functions. In addition to routine matters of business in both capacities, subjects of special interest include the proposals of Dr. William Carson (1770-1843) for the establishment of a whaling industry in Newfoundland; the efforts made by Lieutenant David Buchan of H.M.S. ADONIS to contact the Beothuck Indians; and the War of 1812 as it affected Newfoundland.
