Series consists of correspondence, memoranda, notebooks, personal journals, manuscripts, memoirs, financial records, and other material relating to Hamilton Southam's father, Wilson Mills Southam.

The correspondence largely relates to Wilson Mills Southam's career as publisher of the Ottawa Citizen and to the building of the Southam Press empire. Included is correspondence with other family members, including William Southam, F.N. Southam, H.S. Southam, and J.D. Southam, regarding expansion of the business, acquisition of new papers, financial matters, editorial policies, political connections, and other matters. Among the papers involved were the Hamilton Spectator, Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Winnipeg Tribune and Vancouver Province. Included is material on the 1945 strike by the International Typographical Union.

The correspondence includes letters from Mackenzie King 1926-1943, R.L. Borden 1932, J.E. Atkinson of the Toronto Star 1938-1946, John Bracken 1942, G.F. Towers 1942, Graham Spry 1942, and Charles Ritchie 1945. There are also letters 1928-1947 from Wilson Mills Southam to Hamilton Southam.

The manuscripts relate to Wilson Mills Southam's interest in Christian Science, teetotalism, tax reform, parliamentary reform, unemployment, and monetary reform. The series includes correspondence relating to Southam's publication of the pamphlet No Germany (1945), with co-author Dorothy Snow Smith.

Also included in the series is a phrenological analysis of Wilson Mills Southam by Stackpool E. O'Dell 1901. A certificate of membership in the Ottawa Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society 1925 is stored in vol. 61.
