Inuit have lived in Northern Labrador for thousands of years. Nunatsiavut is the homeland of the Inuit of Newfoundland and Labrador. The word in the Inuit language of Inuttut means "our beautiful land". In 2005, with the ratification of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and the swearing in of the first Nunatsiavut Assembly in 2006, the Inuit of Labrador became the first Inuit in Canada to achieve self-government.
Nain is the most northerly community in Nunatsiavut. It was settled by Moravian Christian Missionaries in 1771. During the 1950's, Inuit from the now abandoned communities of Okak, Nutak, and Hebron were relocated further south to Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, and Happy Valley - Goose Bay.
It is thought that the Moravians would not have been able to establish missions in Labrador had it not been for the assistance of Mikak, an Inuk woman from northern Labrador. Mikak (c.1740 - October 1, 1795), also known as Micoc, Mykok, or Mecock, was from the area of Okak and Hebron. In 1767 she was taken as a prisoner during an altercation between Inuit and the British Royal Navy. In 1768 the Governor of Newfoundland, Hugh Palliser, ordered that she and her sons Tuttauk and Karpik be taken to England. While there, she met members of the aristocracy including Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales and developed a friendship with her. Upon Mikak's return to Labrador, she acted as an intermediary between the German Moravian Christian missionaries and Inuit, facilitating peaceful meetings between both groups.
