This file contains the data collected during the 1978 survey regarding the employment/unemployment histories of approximately 18,000 people between January 1973 and the summer of 1978. The survey was conducted in order to obtain information about the process of labour force adjustment following the displacement of workers due to plant shutdowns and layoffs. The type of information in the file includes the starting and ending months for each employment episode, wage rates, name of employer, type of industry, individual's occupation, duration of employment and reason for leaving, activities during unemployment, use of savings, willingness to relocate, willingness to accept a lower wage, amount of time person looked for employment, reason why individual not looking for employment and various personal socio-economic characteristics of the individual.

CONSERVATION NOTE: Two versions of each survey have been archived. These include copies of the 1977 and 1978 LFT databases (i.e. raw data files) and the 1977 and 1978 LFT SPSS system files. The SPSS system files are the versions that were utilized by Industry, Trade and Commerce during the statistical analysis phase of the project. They differ from the raw data files in that they consist of edited information and include various variables that were created during the statistical analysis stage.
Each record in the file contains information about a single period of employment, the subsequent period of nonworking (in the case of a termination) and the next job (where applicable). Since each record represents an employment episode, there may be several records for one individual in the file.
