This file contains data collected during the Industrial Labour Force survey which provides information about workers in Canada's manufacturing sector. The survey was conducted during the summer of 1979 and was designed to capture the socio-economic characteristics of the work force as well as information about the respondent's present and previous employment experiences. Since the 1979 survey provides information about the processes of labour force adjustment, it can be used in conjunction with the labour force tracking surveys which were carried out in 1977 and 1978. Only three industry samples can be used with any degree of confidence. These include the clothing, textile and footwear sectors of the manufacturing industry. Although the industries in the rest of the survey cannot support sector analysis they may be used to handle special requests and other applications without rigorous sample requirements. The clothing industry sample is based on information from 2001 respondents from 53 companies. The textile industry sample is based upon interviews with 2293 people from 39 companies and the footwear industry sample included responses from 676 people working for 16 different companies.

CONSERVATION NOTE: Two versions of this survey have been archived. These include a copy of the 1979 raw data file (G0000864) and a copy of the SAS system file (G0000944). The SAS system file was the version that was utilized by Industry, Trade and Commerce during the statistical analysis phase of the project.
Each record in the file contains information about a single period of employment, the subsequent period of nonworking (in the case of a termination) and the next job (where applicable). Since each record represents an employment episode, there may be several records for one individual in the file.
