QThis file contains information that pertains to a tree ring sample from the area of Dolomite Lake II, N.W.T. Included in the file is the raw data on magnetic tape, the associated summary chronologies, printed outputs of the tree ring parameters and density profile values.

The specific objective of this study was to collect, process, and present tree ring chronologies that could be compared with other forms of proxy data for purposes of reconstructing past climatic records. An effort was made to collect from the oldest and most climatically sensitive trees on the site. Corollary objectives were to evaluate the dendrochronological quality of trees from this area and to produce tree ring chronologies which could be used for dating purposes.

The majority of the files contain tree ring data to 1971. Samples were taken from three trees that died in 1904, 1922 and 1923.

CONSERVATION NOTE: Originally, the data base commenced with several identification and scanning information records written in ASCII; now these records are in EBCDIC. In addition, the unloaded database was changed from variable length to fixed length; each record was extended to a physical length of 120 columns.

There are 21 datasets associated for G0000829. When these files were migrated from EBCDIC binary format to the ASCII encoding format in 2016, the files were totally restructured.
In some files in the series, there were two, three, four or five 120 byte ASCII records at the beginning of the file that contained metadata about each tree for a specific site. The following is an example for G0000829_Data01_Binary:

These records have been stripped off of each dataset and been saved independently from the tree ring data in the Converted Headers directory under PM1. All of the original data resides in the PM0 directory.
In addition, in the original data files, there were two 120 byte data records for each year that is associated with a tree ring. When the files were converted, these two records were combined into one long record so the data could be used with spreadsheet applications such as Excel.
As an example, file G0000829_Data01_Binary originally contained 228 records. The first four metadata records have been stripped from the file for a total 224 records. When the two records for each data set were concatenated into one record upon migration, the converted file now only contains 112 records. Each of these records is associated with a specific year. The output data is 557 bytes long to allow space for the converted integer binary values.
In the situations where there were other than three metadata records at the beginning of the original file, different SAS runs were used.
The SAS runs used to convert the data are included as part of the metadata: CONVERT_TEMPLATE2.SAS is the code used for the files with 2 lines of 'header' and CONVERT_TEMPLATE3.SAS was used for 3, CONVERT4.SAS was used for 4, etc.

Custodial history:

All 21 files were migrated from a binary file structure and placed on new preservation media in 2016.

There is one file for each tree in the sample.
