This files consists of two datafiles capturing the Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings database, which held a comprehensive architectural inventory of approximately 150,000 historic buildings across approximately 30 cities in Canada. The inventory was established in 1970 to provide data that would enable the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to judge not only the significance of a single building or group of buildings, but to be able to compare it with all others of similar style and value. This particular survey is one of three phases and describes the exterior characteristics of the buildings. It is considered to be the first comprehensive architectural inventory in the world created for a computerized information system.

The data is preserved as code presented as a numeric or alphanumeric value in each field.

Datafile G000265 1 contains records from Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba.

Datafile G0000265 2 contains records from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Researchers are advised to use the Code Book, and examples of the original survey forms and training manual, submitted by Parks Canada at the time of transfer, to assist in interpreting the coded variables. Copies of these documents are available in the documentation package which is found in LAC's corporate records as file G0000265.

Custodial history:

This dataset was transferred to the Public Archives of Canada in 1977 from the Research Division, National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. The data was originally transferred on two magnetic tapes and later copied by the Machine Readable Archives onto five 29 x 2.5 cm 2400' magnetic tapes. In 2013, the data migrated to new preservation media.
