Bound volume of separate manuscript texts containing navigational and descriptive information on Vancouver Island, portions of the coast of mainland British Columbia, the southern interior of the province, and the Queen Charlotte Islands. The four texts are: (1) an alphabetical index to the locations described; (2) text of a "Vancouver Island and British Columbia Pilot" containing mainly navigational data (with alternative drafts of pp. 170-172 filmed at beginning of text); (3) a report dated 7 July 1859 by Lieut. Richard C. Mayne of H.M.S. Plumper to his commanding officer Captain G.H. Richards, describing in detail his exploration of the lower Fraser, Thompson and Okanagan watersheds during an expedition connected with "Ned Gowan's War"; with remarks on geography, climate, trade and native populations; and (4) text of a "Queen Charlotte Islands Pilot", containing mainly navigation information.

An edited version of the second of these texts was published by the Admiralty Hydrographic Department as The Vancouver Island Pilot, Containing Directions for the Coast of Vancouver Island, and Part of British Columbia. Compiled from the Surveys Made by Captain George Henry Richards, R.N., in Her Majesty's Ships Plumper and Hecate, Between the Years 1858 and 1864... (London: printed by J.D. Potter, 1864).
